Government outlines tidal energy plans

Plans have been outlined today on how best to make use of the potential of wave and tidal energy.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has today outlined the possibilities for wave and tidal energy in England and Wales.
A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) was carried out on the renewable energy source and further options for Britain's waters were also considered.
Energy and climate change minister David Kidney addressed the Renewable UK Wave and Tidal Conference: "I am keen that we get as much of our energy as we can from home-grown sources, and our seas are a fantastic asset that can help us do this - in a number of ways.
He added: "The exercise I'm launching today will help us identify opportunities for new development, whilst taking into account any possible impacts on the marine environment."
The waters which surround the UK have the potential to generate electricity. But in addition to this, the government is considering ways in which the oceans could safely store carbon dioxide and provide a platform for the further development of wind, oil and gas activities.
